Our Origins


Founder Scott Shively is a native San Diegan and a long-time grilling and barbecue enthusiast.  Scott is well known for his weekend spreads featuring grilled and smoked meats using recipes and techniques developed through trial and error over the years. His early training as a chef and prior experience working in local restaurants provided a solid background to further his interests in cooking while he worked full time in law enforcement. Laura, his wife, also has a hospitality background and has a career in banking.   

Scott and Laura established Big Belly Rub Company in 2011 with encouragement from friends and family and look forward to serving you for years to come.

In May 2018 Scott's daughter Brittany took over production and distribution of Big Belly Rub Company.

Big Belly Rub Company was founded with the goal of providing cooks of all skill levels with an easy way to prepare meats with a fabulous gourmet taste, indoors or out, and at a reasonable price.

Big Belly spice rubs are handcrafted from recipes developed over the past 25 years by the company’s proprietor.  We know you will enjoy the lively flavors and unique tastes provided by our products.

Many Americans struggle to even put food on the table each day. Therefore, Big Belly Rub Company has pledged to give back to the community.   A donation of 2% of Big Belly’s gross revenues are given to local charities working to eliminate hunger in America.

Big Belly Rub Company is proud to announce that our rubs are now available to you at our local grocer and butcher, Valley Farm Market.  Valley Farm Market has been a San Diego area favorite since 1956 and is located at 9040 Campo Road, Spring Valley, CA 91977.
